Harold Offeh
Harold Offeh’s work is playful in its nature, questioning notions of identity, race and representation. He employs a range of strategies in his work, including found footage, interactive and digital media, site specific performance and video. The artist himself often appears in his own work, appropriating familiar cultural references and using humour as a tool to assess contemporary media representations and stereotypes.
More recently, Offeh’s work has addressed ideas of collaboration, co-operation and participation. His recent curatorial project, The Mothership Collective, explored the theme of Afro-futurism through collective engagement with other artists. Offeh looked for ways to extend the invite to everyone aboard the mothership!
Offeh is a London based, Ghanaian born artist. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Fine Art Photography, he has exhibited widely internationally and completed residencies and projects including Tate Modern, Gasworks and the ICA. Significant past work includes Alien Communication, 1999, Being Mammy, 2004 (a video and performance work exploring the caricature of actress Hattie McDaniel), and Haroldhino, 2003 (charting site specific performances during Offeh's two month residency in Rio de Janeiro). He was awarded a debiBel Visual Arts Award in 2006. |
