The Higher Education
Innovation Fund supports
Peckham Space
The Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) is provided to Universities by the Higher Education Funding Council for England on behalf of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
The fund builds capacity and provides incentives for higher education institutions to work with business, public sector bodies and third sector [1] partners, with a view to transferring knowledge and thereby improving products, goods and services. It is designed to support and develop a broad range of knowledge transfer activities which result in economic and social benefit to the UK.
Through the use of its HEIF money, the University is the first public funder of Peckham Space. The London Borough of Southwark has added its financial support to the project. The University’s generous financial support of Peckham Space will play a direct and key role in the development of Peckham’s cultural quarter. It is hoped that other public funding bodies will follow this example and support the further development of cultural activity at Peckham Space.
University of Arts London is the UK university most closely linked to the creative industries. The University has a strong tradition of providing high quality vocational education in its specialist areas, at all levels from access to PhD. It has built an effective and innovative research culture across its discipline areas. The University plays a vital role in serving the knowledge transfer needs of the creative industries in London and the UK, in the arts, design and communications.
[1]The 'third sector' is defined by the Cabinet Office on its web-site as follows: 'The third sector is a diverse, active and passionate sector. Organisations in the sector share the common characteristics of being non-governmental organisations which are driven by their values and which principally reinvest any financial surpluses to further social, environmental or cultural objectives. It encompasses voluntary and community organisations, charities, social enterprises, cooperatives and mutuals both large and small.
